Using SecureFX for FTP Access to Servers

Adding Sessions

  1. Open SecureFX (icon may be on desktop, or listed in Program Files under the Start menu).
  2. It should open with a Connect window; this Connect window may have numerous folders (see figure 1). Image:securefx_screen1.jpg
    1. The folders may be deleted by right-clicking and selecting “Delete.” You may also highlight the individual folders and use the “X” button on the menu bar to delete the folders. This will make the FTP sites you are going to add much more noticeable.
    2. Once the folders are all gone, you’re ready to add your sites.
  3. Click on the “New Session” button on the menu bar.
  4. Select “FTP over SSH2” in the first dialog box, and click on “Next”
  5. In the “Host Name” line, enter the full name of the server you wish to connect to – lan104.psych.wisc.edu or tezpur.keck.waisman.wisc.edu, for example. If you are planning to add all the servers at Brogden, you may copy this host name and modify it for each additional session (lan105, lan106, lan107, lan108)
  6. Leave the port at 21 and click “Next”
  7. Leave both user name and password blank here. Saving user names and passwords is not a good idea on shared computers. Click “Next.”
  8. Leave initial directory blank on the next screen, unless you know for sure what directory and path you will always want to FTP into. Once logged in, you can move between all directories you have access to, so leaving it blank will not lock you out of anything. Click “Next.”
  9. You can leave these boxes as they are, as well, although I generally shorten the name to just “Lan104” for instance. A description could be “main server at Brogden” if you think you might forget. Click “Finish.”
  10. You should be back to the original screen, with the new connection now shown. You may add as many additional servers as you want by going through Steps 3-9 above.

Connecting to a Session

  1. Open SecureFX.
  2. Select one of the sessions in your Connect window and select the “Connect” button.
  3. You may or may not get a ZoneAlarm security alert – if you do, please select the “Remember this setting” option and then the “Allow” button for as many alerts as pop up.
  4. You will probably get a dialog box about the “Host Key” (see figure 2). Adrian, John and Alanna select “Accept Once” (which means next time you log in, you have to accept once again); most other folks “Accept and Save” – you decide which group you want to side with. Image:secureFX_screen2.jpg
  5. Enter your user name, select OK
  6. Enter your password, select OK
  7. You should be placed into your home directory (see figure 3). Image:securefx_screen3.jpg
  8. If you need to be elsewhere on the server, you can navigate through by selecting the plus sign (+) in front of “psyphw_disks” in the left-hand column. From here, you can see and select any of the directories on Lan104.
  9. Be sure to close the session by exiting SecureFX.
